Summer Exhibition 2003

By Our Chairman ANNE HAMERTON

Before I tell you about this year’s Summer Exhibition, I want to say how thrilled I am about our first Newsletter and I am sure you all feel the same, so we must thank Di Alexander for taking on this project. I felt that this year’s exhibition ran very smoothly, with many added bonuses. Firstly, the banner (see photo above) given and made by our founder Reg Whiting. You could see this from the Salisbury Road and was great for advertising, plus Doug Ware’s adverts on Teletext, local papers and Radio Solent.

The handing-in evening went very smoothly, thanks to Gary’s help and the display of paintings hung by Ruth, Mary and Mike Wheeler-Osman was superb. Without the help of the usual helpers, who go unnamed but not unnoticed, this would never work so easily. What about the preview evening? What a buzz! Also Dr Julian Lewis has offered to help with the write-ups for the Echo, should we have any further events coming off.

I hope that you noticed that I kept my promise and no paintings were put on the floor. We sold thirty-seven paintings altogether.

Paintings sold were packed in either bubble-wrap with our logo on, or white carrier bags with our logo on, just to give a nice finishing touch. We ended the exhibition with the presentation of a stand made for us by Eddie Langley (Sheila’s husband) to use in our one-day sales, for prints, etc. It is superb quality and is to match a ballot box, - very posh!

My only regret of this year’s exhibition is that some members who exhibited paintings did not sit in and the rules to say that you must sit in, or get someone else to do it for you. Next year anyone not doing their share will face heavy penalties, as it is not fair on those who sit in two or three times. I would like to end by saying good luck to Diane with the newsletter and please give her all your support.
