PAULA HUMPHREY

Oh dear Oh dear!! What have I done - agreed to do the art challenge in pastel. Well there's no going back now and tonight's the night. Sitting in the hall by my easel, rows of people sitting opposite didn't know there was going to be an audience thought it would be the odd member passing by now and again. Here comes the picture we have to paint "oh no" it's an autumn scene don't know if I have any pastels the right colour, wish I was painting in oil at least I would know where to start. Still don't panic, try to concentrate and get something on the paper.

Painting away now, things are not going well and the easel keeps trying to fall over can things get any worse? Oh yes here comes a video camera and they want me to speak as well, don't they know I've only just started trying to paint in pastel. Calm down, just relax, breathe, give them a smile and say you don't know that will have to do.

Now it's time to pack up and I've only just got started, well lets clear this mess up and get out of here at least it's all over now. Well have I learnt any thing from this experience? Yes two things, firstly never agree to do something if your not sure what it entails and your not used to the medium you are using, secondly and most importantly what a great group of people the members of TAS are, and I thank them for their kind words, support and for making a new member so welcome.

Pat painting with watercolour

PAT WELLER

This was an evening among friends, so I was not nervous as we waited for the start of two hours of painting with all eyes on the five of us. I soon settled down to spilling water on the floor [only spots] and mixing all the wrong paints. John said £3 an hour for using his hair drier on our watercolours so I declined his jokey offer and fanned my early washes with the subject card which had been provide. Members came round and gave encouragement. One or two suggestions were useful too. Pat Garvey brought us cups of tea or coffee as we battled against the two hour deadline in our own individual styles.

There was no time to see how every one else was doing. Voting was done and counted. It mattered not that I did not win the prize because it was such an enjoyable evening. Congrats to Carole on her win and thanks to Claire for putting this evening on the programme. Great fun.

JOHN SHOTTER

There were five paintings and they were all completely different. That's what I like about art. If you painted a picture of a garden shed there would be five different garden sheds. It was good that Carol won, because it made her day. I found it very entertaining and I enjoyed the whole evening.
