MARY AUSTIN
Picture the scene: 5 easels, 5 artists, 1 picture - what
does it bring to mind? - Watercolour Challenge, but Claire's version -
another of her great ideas! I was "invited" to do the oil painting
and "arm behind back" I agreed!
What a fun evening it was - the atmosphere was great and Anne and Claire
filled their roles beautifully as Hannah Gordon and the visiting art critic
(a female Brian Sewell??) and we even had our own cameraman.
I found it slightly nerve-wracking in an enjoyable sort of way and having
members come over and comment or ask questions added to the pleasure.
It was a great evening and I hope we do it again, with me in the audience
this time!

CAROL
THORPE
I was
really scared because I have not been painting long and I did not know
what to expect. I had only been to one or two meetings. When Claire asked
me to take part, I thought that I was signing up for a workshop. When
I discovered what it was, I was terrified. Yet everyone had been so nice
to me and so welcoming, that when Claire talked to me about it again,
I thought I could not let everyone down. So I just went with it and did
my best.
I thoroughly enjoyed the evening and had a lovely time.
I was astonished that I'd won. I was absolutely thrilled and it gave me
confidence to keep on. I've signed up for a life drawing class on Wednesday
evenings at Hounsdown. I need to improve my drawing skills to produce
good work. I love inks at the moment and will try oils next and I want
to stay with Totton Art Society.
